Established by the Association of periOperative Registered Nurses (AORN), Perioperative Nurses Week is an annual celebration focused on perioperative nurses and the broad variety of patient care services they provide in the surgical setting. The Villages® Regional Hospital will celebrate Perioperative Nurses Week November 12 through 18, 2017.
Perioperative nurses work in a fast-paced, multifaceted environment as part of the surgical team, which also comprises surgeons, anesthesia professionals, technologists, and other staff members. “Teamwork is critical to our success,” says Tammy Gorby, Perioperative Services Educator at The Villages® Regional Hospital. “Each team member performs a designated role. Perioperative nurses must be aware of the total environment in the OR suite in addition to the immediate needs of the patient. Like each member of the surgical team, the perioperative RN helps ensure safe, quality care for the surgical patient.”
As part of the celebration, The Villages® Regional Hospital will host a Mock Operating Room (OR) Thursday, November 9 from 8:30 a.m. until 3 p.m. in the hospital’s Advanced Surgery Center lobby. More than 115 students from local schools such as The Villages Charter School, South Sumter High School, and Wildwood Middle High School will be in attendance.
“This event gives students from our area the opportunity to learn about the medical field in an up-close and personal way,” continued Tammy. “There are so many different careers in the operating room and in perioperative services. This is an important step in getting students interested.”
Representatives from various medical industry companies will staff interactive stations where students and visitors can explore different surgical instruments, learn proper hand sanitation techniques, discover how total knee and hip replacements work and even how to perform laparoscopic surgery. All are invited to attend.
